Game Setup
- Place the board in the center, with the Reef Health Tracker set at the highest level.
- Each player picks a character and takes the corresponding player piece. Shuffle the Action Cards and place them face down.
- Place Pollution Tokens in the Pollution Zone, based on the game’s difficulty
- 3 pollution tokens for a lower difficulty and 5 pollution tokens for a higher difficulty
- Place Sea Creature Tokens in the Fish Habitats and Coral Gardens to start.
How the Game Works
Turn Sequence
On each player’s turn, they will:
- Draw an Action Card: The card will tell the player what action they can take, like cleaning pollution, restoring coral, or protecting sea creatures.
- Move: Players move their piece around the board, depending on where the action card tells them to move. They can only perform certain actions in certain zones (e.g., cleaning pollution happens in the Pollution Zone, restoring coral happens in the Coral Gardens).
- Perform an Action: Based on the action card, the player will perform the indicated action (e.g.,remove pollution, restore coral, etc.).
- Character card: Characters have certain abilities and they can play their character card at any point throughout the game on their turn along with drawing an action card.
- Pollution Growth: After each turn, a new pollution token is added to the Pollution Zone to represent the ongoing environmental threats. If the Pollution Zone gets too full, the reef’s health decreases..
- Reef Health: Every time players restore coral or remove pollution, they move the Reef Health Tracker up one tick.If the reef’s health reaches the maximum level, the players win!
- Challenge Cards: Occasionally, an Event Card might be drawn, which could cause a coral bleaching, over fishing, or other environmental threat. There will be a negative action if one of these cards are drawn.
Winning the Game
Players win if they manage to keep the reef healthy (i.e., the Reef Health Meter stays at a high level)by the end of the game. This happens by successfully managing pollution, protecting marine life, and restoring coral.
Losing the Game
If the coral reef health indicator falls into the red zone, the game is over and the players were notable to protect the coral reef from climate change and pollution impacts.
